The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus team is developing artificial intelligence-powered decision-support (DS) tools to improve safety and personalize care for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). These tools integrate clinical data with information from sensors that capture daily-living activities such as movement and eating patterns. By merging these data streams, the system aims to predict patient safety risks, including non-adherence and adverse events, as well as caregiver burnout, enabling earlier interventions and stronger support systems. The multidisciplinary research team brings expertise in systems engineering, nursing, medicine, health informatics, decision-support development, implementation science, health services research in nursing homes, and sensor-based monitoring. Team members have experience in qualitative research, self-management of chronic disease, and the design and evaluation of AI-based technologies. Several investigators have led federally and locally funded research and have collaborated successfully on past projects. Collectively, this group’s broad technical and clinical knowledge positions them to advance AI-powered solutions that address both patient safety and caregiver well-being in real-world care environments.
